Surrealism Comparison
Photographer: Hugh Kretschmer
Title: Boxing Gloves
Date of Work: Unknown
Description: This picture is of hands being depicted as boxing gloves. The hands are laced and are open at the bottom just as real boxing gloves are.
Analysis: A personal image that reflects Kretschmer's fascination and repulsion to the sport of boxing, a theme that seems to continue to appear in his artwork.
Interpretation: I believe that artist it trying to convey that boxing is barbaric and whether you are hitting with your bare hands or with padded gloves it is the same thing.
Judgment: I think the way that Kretschmer portrays the sport of boxing is accurate. Many people relate boxing with fighting on the streets.
Hugh Kretschmer was only 13 when he discovered photography under the guidance of his father. Throughout his 22 year career most of is artwork include a metaphor and hand crafted a trick-the-eye elements. Even though his fame had come recently he doesn't let that effect his work.
Artist name: Marcel Duchamp
Title: Yvonne and Magdeleine Torn in Tatters
Date of Work:1911
Description: This picture has multiple faces facing in different directions.
Analysis: When you first look at this picture you only notice the two main faces. Then the more you look at it the more face you spot out. Also because the painting is in different colors which to me define either the different personalities of each face or different emotions.
Interpretation: The painting is made to reflect the different emotions with the color the face is in. Also it represents the different personalities by the direction the face is in.
Judgment: I thought it was unique how the artist hid the other faces in the two main faces. I also like how this painting made me look deeper than most to really see the whole picture.
Marcel Duchamp was a French- American painter and sculpture whose work associated with dadism which is the foundation of surrealism. He was commonly referred along with Pablo Picasso and other famous artist. He had a great impact on the twentieth century. Although by World War I he rejected most of the work by many of his fellow artist as retinal art.
Comparison: The first photo is more of a metaphor than the second picture. The painting by Duchamp was more literal to the different emotions that the artist was trying to convey. I enjoyed Kretchmer's work more because he had the same view I did of the sport and with many of his other works.
